Located 21 km from Elubo in the southwest corner of Ghana, The Ankase Conservation Area is an extraordinary bio reserve. Comprising 509 square kilometers of Nini-suhien National Park and Ankase Resource Reserve. The park is the only intact wet evergreen high forest ecosystem remaining in Ghana. It has the highest plant diversity known in the country (600 plan species have been recoreded in a single hectare), as well as the nation’s highest rainfall (17000-200 mm per year.) it has a very high global conservation rating due to size, diversity of plants and wildlife. And relatively undisturbed condition. These attribute have resulted in significant financial support from the international community. Relatively few tourist facilities currently exist beyond a basic visitor center shelter, a few trails and rustic chalet, but more are planned. In the meantime, those who are willing to rough it can experience an extraordinary wild and rugged place. Over 800 vascular plant species have been identified, including several new discoveries yet to be named. Mammals include forest elephant, forest buffalo, leopard, bongo and nine species of primates but the chance of seeing them is very rare. More than 600 butterfly species have been identified, as well as over 190 birds’ species.
